Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by dry skin and intensely itchy red patches.

There are several forms of eczema, the most common being atopic eczema.
The word "atopy" refers to a hereditary tendency to eczema, asthma, and allergic rhinitis (hay fever). People with eczema may also have another atopic disease.
