HMB is a leucine metabolite that is naturally formed in the body.1 A 70 kg individual produces approximately 0.2-0.4 g of HMB per day.2 HMB upregulates protein synthesis in muscle cells, stabilizes muscle cell membranes, and decreases skeletal muscle protein degradation.1, 3-7 When combined with regular physical training, HMB supplementation helps to increase both lean body mass and muscle strength.8,9 The effects of HMB on muscle mass may depend on vitamin D status; in older participants, supplementation with an HMB/arginine/lysine blend only improved muscle strength in participants with normal serum vitamin D levels (less than 30 ng/mL).10 REFERENCES 1.
