Prolax is a vegetarian alternative formulation that helps to relieve simple constipation. This blend of mild cathartics (agents that promote bowel evacuation) will help your body regain control of the elimination process.
Constipation can be chronic, acute, or simply an irregularity caused by diet. Appropriate cathartic treatment regimens for both chronic and acute constipation are based on the judicious use of several plants. The appropriate treatment of diet-induced constipation should usually include prunes, bran, and high-fibre foods, as well as reduced caffeine and alcohol intake.
Butternut has been recognized over the last century as one of the most effective, yet mild and safe, laxatives. Butternut bark is good not only as a laxative but also for treating liver disorders and intestinal diseases.
The part of the cascara sagrada tree, or “sacred bark” (Rhamnus purshiana), used is its bark. It is native to the Pacific Northwest coast and has been used by several indigenous tribes in that region, stretching from British Columbia to California, to treat constipation and stomach upsets. Cascara sagrada is recognized worldwide as a gentle and effective natural laxative.
Turkish rhubarb, in small doses, is an excellent fortifying tonic for the stomach. In large doses, it acts as a laxative. The purgative action of Turkish rhubarb root is useful in cases of constipation, but it also exerts a subsequent astringent effect. Therefore, it actually has a cleansing action on the intestine, from which it removes debris, and it also has antiseptic properties.
Licorice, the "grandfather" of Chinese plants, is mainly used as a flavouring for candies, lozenges, syrups, tonics, and laxatives. Licorice is present in most herbal blends to balance other plants and promote vitality. It is a source of magnesium, silicon, and thiamine. In addition to being a mild laxative itself, it helps counteract the unpleasant effects that can result from laxative use. It provides slight reinforcement to the adrenal system, which can be under pressure in certain weak conditions for which laxatives are often suggested. But what is even more important is that licorice protects and heals the mucous membranes of the intestinal tract.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Adults: Take 2–6 capsules in a single dose on the same day, two to three times per week. Allow at least 6–12 hours for the laxative effect to occur. If no results are observed, the frequency of use can be increased to once daily. The correct individual dose is the smallest required to produce soft stools. If you are taking other medications or natural health products, take this product a few hours before or after them.
Duration of use: Consult a healthcare practitioner for use beyond 7 days.
WARNINGS
Does not contain: Gluten, soy, wheat, corn, eggs, yeast, citrus, artificial flavour or colour, starch, or sugar.
Cautions and warnings: Consult a healthcare practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen. Consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use if you are taking thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, licorice root, or other medications or health products that may exacerbate electrolyte imbalance; if you are taking heart medications such as cardiac glycosides or antiarrhythmics; if you have fecal impaction or symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever; or if you have liver disease, stomach ulcers, or inflammation. Reduce dose or stop use if you experience abdominal pain, cramps, spasms, or diarrhea.
Contraindications: Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; if you suffer from abnormal constrictions of the gastrointestinal tract, potential or existing intestinal obstruction, lazy bowel, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, abdominal pain of unknown origin, undiagnosed rectal bleeding, severe dehydration with water and electrolyte loss, or diarrhea; if you suffer from hypokalemia, high blood pressure, or a cardiovascular or kidney disorder; or if you suffer from arthritis. Contraindicated for those with a sensitive stomach and those who do not have constipation.
Known adverse reactions: Hypersensitivity may occur; in which case, discontinue use. With chronic use or abuse, electrolyte balance disorders, particularly potassium deficiency, albuminuria, and hematuria, may occur. Rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement after laxative use may indicate a serious condition. May cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as cramps, which may require a reduction in dosage. The astringent effect of rhubarb may exacerbate, rather than relieve, constipation symptoms.
Do not use if the seal is broken. Keep out of reach of children.
