Combination of EPA, DHA and Plant Sterols • Helps maintain and support cardiovascular health and reduce serum triglycerides • Provides 700 mg of EPA and 525 mg of DHA per daily dose • Provides 325 mg of plant sterol esters per daily dose • Delicious natural orange flavor Recent research indicates that in diets rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, a combination of plant sterols and fish oils better promotes cardiovascular health than fish oils alone.1 EPA and DHA decrease the breakdown of triglycerides in fat cells, while increasing their breakdown in the heart and skeletal muscles.2 Fish oils cause the absorption of these fatty acids by adipose tissue and decrease their supply to the liver.2 This prevents their incorporation into very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL molecules that transport lipids from the liver to other parts of the body) and leads to a decrease in VLDL production.2 β-oxidation of fatty acids in the liver, fat, heart, and skeletal muscles is also increased.2 This converts fatty acids into acetyl-CoA for energy production in the Krebs cycle and decreases the amount of fatty acids available for triglyceride synthesis.2 Genes that regulate the synthesis, storage, and β-oxidation of triglycerides are also affected by plant sterols.2,3 In randomized placebo-controlled trials, daily supplementation of 1.3-1.4 g of EPA and DHA in combination with plant sterols for 3-4 weeks significantly reduced serum triglycerides by approximately 14-25% in hyperlipidemic adults.4,5
